Frequently Asked Questions
Who can benefit from speech therapy?
People of all ages can benefit from speech pathology. AHSPS supports children, teenagers and young adults who experience speech sound difficulties, language delays, literacy challenges, fluency concerns, and orofacial myofunctional concerns. We also assist individuals who use or may benefit from AAC to communicate effectively.
Do I need a referral to see a speech pathologist?
No, you don’t need a referral to book an appointment. You can contact AHSPS directly. Some funding options, such as Medicare or private health insurance, may require a referral or plan from your GP.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
If your child is hard to understand, struggles to express themselves, has difficulty following instructions, or is falling behind in reading and writing, it may be helpful to book an assessment. Early intervention can make a big difference in your child’s communication, learning and wellbeing.

Do you offer telehealth speech therapy?
Yes, AHSPS provides telehealth services, it’s therapy from the comfort of your own home! This flexible option is ideal for families who would like to save travel time or live outside the Adelaide Hills. Telehealth sessions are interactive, engaging, and just as effective as in-person therapy. All you need is an internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone.
What happens during a speech pathology assessment?
An assessment may include observation, discussion, and standardised testing to understand your or your child’s communication skills. Depending on your needs, this may include speech sounds, language, literacy, or orofacial function. You’ll receive a detailed report and a tailored therapy plan. Appointments are available at two clinic locations - Woodside and Mount Barker - in your home, school, or community setting within the Adelaide Hills, or via telehealth.
How long does speech therapy take?
Therapy length depends on individual goals. Some people achieve progress quickly, while others benefit from ongoing support. Consistency and home practice improve progress and support generalisation of skills to outside of the therapy room.
What is the difference between speech and language?
Speech is how we say sounds and words. It is typical for young children to say some sounds incorrectly. Certain sounds may not be mastered until after 3 years old.
Language is made up of the words we use to share ideas and communicate with others. Language includes listening, speaking, understanding, reading and writing.
Some people experience challenges with one area, while others have difficulties with both. Therapy at AHSPS supports all aspects of communication, including speech, language, and literacy.
